In fact, Kinzie will quickly make an observation that New Hades is designed awfully similar to Steelport, though the actual city is a bit smaller. Not a lot has changed about the Saints Row experience in Gat out of Hell. Players can switch back-and-forth between Gat and sidekick Kinzie at the central Ultor hub, with none of their abilities really changing, though their dialogue is equally amusing. As one might expect, Gat's main plan involves shooting Satan in the face, so to do so, he's directed on a path of destruction by the Ultor Corporation's Dane Vogel, making his return from Saints Row 2. Gat brings along former FBI agent Kinzie Kensington (who insists on riding along, because it's her birthday) and enters the depths of New Hades in an effort to stop an unholy wedding between the President and Satan's daughter, Jezebel. Removing the element of character customization is unfortunate, but the trade-off is the ability to control the baddest gangbanger of all-time, Johnny Gat. Unlike previous entries in the franchise, the main character is not the President of the United States, as he has been taken to Hell after a random Ouija board accident.

As brief as it is, though, it's more of the same over-the-top craziness that has made this series a blissful combination of manic violence and laugh-out-loud comedy. It's meant to be an expansion of Saints Row IV and it definitely like one, as it winds up being a short experience that extends on many of the last game's concepts.

Saints Row: Gat out of Hell takes all the wackiness of Volition's open-world franchise and takes it into the depths of underworld. It reminds me about how it's so easy to criticize the most minute parts of a film you aren't feeling, but in a film you are it's much easier to handwaive those same criticisms.Saints Row is kicking off this gaming year by taking a trip to Hell. But they got a pass because - hey - as someone in the mid-aughts, they look like what my suburban-ass thinks gangsters look like. But the template they're comparing it to is older SR titles that were largely guilty of the same thing, but never had that criticism leveled against them. People wear actual normal clothing in the new SR and people say that the clothing doesn't reflect their roles. I'm sure there are several games you like and have played where the characters don't dress in a way that clearly reflects their role, and I question how many of these games were criticized by you for that reason. I think it's just a question of whether you would have this issue if the characters dressed in ways you thought gangsters dressed. No one's disagreeing that clothing can tell us something about what a person does or that good design can't incorporate this in a nuanced, but communicative way. Day 1 they're in it for themselves and have no moral justification or high minded goal. New SR crew are explicitly the bad guys and looking to go out to build up a criminal empire. But that didn't mesh with the actual gameplay and open world that let you be a total nut job causing death, destruction and mayhem all over. They were positioned as the good guys at every turn. WD2 didn't work because Dedsec were high minded vigilantes trying to fight the system and the man for the good of everyone. The issue only arises with how they use that and where they go with it. The fact alone that Eli has a student loan debt or one of the other crew were denied the job they wanted is not a problem in itself as a starting off point. It's all about how you present that escalation of action as to whether it makes for good satire and enjoyable absurdity. You start with something normal, mundane and relatable but then where you go with it becomes increasingly more extreme and over the top in ways that people don't expect and would never occur in real life. That's what makes for a good satire and power fantasy and makes absurdist humor work.
